‘Birds Singing Under the Moon’, 2024 Statement by Dahye Kim
As an interdisciplinary digital media artist, my work often draws inspiration from a convergence of disciplines, integrating technology, visual art, and environmental consciousness. Through diverse media, I seek to reimagine concepts of time, memory, and our evolving relationship with the environment. Central to my practice are color, light, movement, and immersive installations, which I use to engage audiences in a sensory exploration of these themes.
My recent installation, “Birds Singing Under the Moon,” explores the profound impact of technological progression and environmental change on our connection to nature. This piece invites viewers into a reflective space where nature and technology meet, sparking contemplation on how our relationship with the environment is evolving. Using a symphony of birdsong, vibrant light projections, and visual movement, I create a poetic dialogue that unfolds through the senses.
The experience begins with a journey into the installation space, where viewers are welcomed by the distant call of birds and a soft, inviting glow. This initial encounter sets a tone of mystery and anticipation, leading into an environment where light and color play dynamically on the surfaces of the gallery. Shifting patterns of light sweep across walls, transforming the architecture into an expansive canvas that merges the tangible with the imagined. The interplay between light and shadow blurs the line between reality and dream, enveloping viewers in a continuously changing landscape of visual and auditory experiences.
“Birds Singing Under the Moon” transcends being a mere visual spectacle; it is an experience that embodies personal exploration. The interaction between the installation and its audience is key: as viewers move through the space, their presence influences the artwork itself. Their shadows and reflections become intertwined with the projected colors, creating a dynamic dialogue between the viewer and the piece. This interactivity evokes the sensation of navigating an unknown space where light shifts gently, and time feels fluid and expansive.
The work seeks to make time palpable, expanding beyond traditional media into a living, responsive environment. It encourages viewers to pause, engage with the present, and appreciate the subtle, fleeting beauty of color and sound that surrounds them. The use of color within the work is deliberate, chosen not only for its visual allure but for its power to evoke emotion and memory, crafting a narrative that feels both fleeting and profoundly personal. By inviting viewers to witness the passage of time through the shifting hues and movements of light, I hope they find a space to reflect on their own memories and reconnect with the surrounding environment.
In this installation, I aspire to create a space where time becomes visible, where the rhythm of nature and technology coexist, and where individuals can find themselves immersed in a balance of contemplation, memory, and sensation. “Birds Singing Under the Moon” invites a moment of stillness, a pause to witness the beauty of the present and reconsider our place within an ever-evolving world.
